The Moshville Times - Band of the Day: Nothing But Echoes

French metal really hit the headlines over the last few years with the rise to fame of Gojira. Could we be looking at one of the bands to follow in their footsteps? Here’s hoping…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Hi, we are from Nantes, France !

How did you meet?

Sébastien (guitars), Eric (drums) and Gilles (guitars) met through an ad. The three of them played together for a while until they met Julien, the bassist. Eric’s brother Marc then joined as a singer. Later on, we met Thomas through an ad and he joined as a keyboardist during the recording process of our first album. Finally, at the beginning of 2019, our drummer Eric left. We then saw Céline’s drum covers on YouTube and were impressed by her skills, so we got in touch with her and one rehearsal later, she was our new drummer.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The band was born in 2015. We started playing shows in 2017 and released our first album in 2018.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Imagine a post-apocalyptic world where there is only one person left on Earth. This person screams as loud as she can in order to hear the echoes of her screams, therefore creating the illusion that someone is actually responding to her and that she is not alone. She has lost everything and what is left for her is nothing but echoes.

What are your influences?

Some of our influences are bands like The Ocean, Opeth, Periphery, Gojira and Leprous.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We like to say that we simply play metal because we don’t want to limit ourselves with our music. The genre that is most similar to ours is progressive metal, but we also like to incorporate elements from metalcore and djent, black metal, hardcore or even electronic music.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We talk about what would happen in a post-apocalyptic world. We also talk about environmental issues and the downfall of mankind.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We give it all on stage in order to deliver both atmospheric and energetic shows. We use specific lights and smoke to provide an immersive visual experience. So far, we have played 22 shows since 2017.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Playing at Hellfest was insane! Our first album was released in October 2018 and in June 2019 we performed on the Hellstage at Hellfest, it was such an honor for us ! This really was an incredible experience.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Guitars/Bass : Both guitarists and the bassist use Amp modeling and Effects Processors : Fractal Axe-FX III and Line6 Helix for the guitars and Kemper for the bass. Gilles is a big fan of Fender

Telecaster guitars, Sébastien plays an Ibanez RGD guitar and Julien plays either a Strandberg or a Fender Precision bass.

Drums : Our former drummer Eric recorded We Are on Pearl drums, Sabian cymbals and a Black Panther Mapex snare. As for live shows, our drummer Céline plays a Sonor Smart Force.

Keyboards : Thomas plays DSI Pro-2 and NORD Electro 5D keyboards.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

While we are writing new songs at the moment, we are still promoting our first album We Are. Our latest music video was released last year, and it features the song “No Cure”. We shot it during our performance at Hellfest in June 2019.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

We are writing songs for our second album. We would like to release the new album late 2021 or in 2022, but we can’t really set specific deadlines due to the current situation of the pandemic.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We would love to be supporting bands like Gojira, Periphery or Architects. As for openers, we would choose Obsidian, a great Progressive Metalcore band from our hometown.
