#RoadToBOA2021 – Struck/Down

It’s that time of year where we set out to interview as many of the Sophie, New Blood, and Jager bands as we can in the lead-up to one of the most anticipated festivals of the year, Bloodstock. Answering our questions here are Struck/Down who play the New Blood Stage on Friday.

Simple things first.  Where are you guys from?

We are all from Kent! Specifically in and around the Canterbury area with all of us living pretty close together within a 20-mile radius.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Struck/Down formed in 2013 with Will and Linden taking the lead. It wasn’t until a couple of years of searching for members that Tommy and Ian joined the fold to really cement Struck/Down.

Where does the name of the band come from?

There’s not really a solid story behind it to be honest! It was a very off-the-top-of-the-head kind of name. Linden was actually listening to a lot of Clutch at the time and we took inspiration from their track named ‘Struck-down’.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our sound is a blend of groove and doom metal but also takes a lot of inspiration from a lot of other genres within metal and beyond. As members, we are all inspired and all listening to lots of different music and we use this to our advantage when it comes to writing for Struck/Down. This is also what gives us that unique edge because we aren’t scared of experimenting and at the end of the day as long as the writing serves the purpose and the groove is strong then it’s Struck/Down worthy.

What’s your live show like? Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

We are a stand-out band from Kent with our own unique style and are confident you won’t find another band at Bloodstock with our blend of metal. Expect high energy, heavy riffs, and vocal hooks that will be stuck in your heads for days after!

Have you been to Bloodstock before? What did you think?

Can’t say we have been to Bloodstock, to be honest! It’s always been on the list to attend and we are super excited to not only be playing but also attending for the first time.

Which M2tM region did you win, or did you come through other channels?

We won the Kent region of M2TM against some very strong competition. Our scene has some great bands and we are honored to have won our heat. It was a great show and great to play amongst not only other talented bands but also our friends as well.

Can you put into 10 words or fewer how it felt when you realised you were heading to Bloodstock?

Elated. All of our hard work has paid off!

What sort of set-list can we expect?

A journey from start to finish showcasing Struck/Down as a whole. Expect us to bring the noise and a contagious energy to really hype up the audience. Riffs, slower riffs, groovier riffs and most importantly riffs.

Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

There are a few specifically on the Friday, Godless Suns are a good shout, Beyond Salvation, Skindred, and of course Devin Townsend just off the top of our heads!

What are you working on at the moment?

Currently, we are working on our upcoming EP From Demons. We have been releasing singles from this EP since the start of 2020 and are looking to release one final single with a music video to finalise the concept of Father Bernard, our EP’s main character. All of these singles can be found on most major streaming platforms along with music videos to watch on YouTube.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

A few years back in a local pub we once started a mosh pit with crowd surfing that caused someone to kick the aircon above us and we all ended up covered in AC fluid.

What drink do you throwback to get yourself fired up before going on stage?

Anything from water all the way up to whiskey depending on the show. We are also partial to some pre-show biscuits to keep them sugar levels up! Tommy is also partial to craft beers because he’s a massive hipster.
