#RoadToStormBreakers2018 – Scarlet Rebels

Now in its second year, StormBreakers sees several bands perform live in front of a crowd and panel of judges at Bathgate’s Dreadnought Rock to secure a place at this year’s Winter Storm in November, following in the footsteps of last year’s inaugural winners Anchor Lane. With the running order not revealed until the night itself, we’re bringing you interviews from all the bands set to take the stage to give you a hint of what to expect on the night. If you’re planning on attending StormBreakers, we hope you make a new discovery or two, even if they don’t take home the coveted prize.

Scarlet Rebels (who we’ve technically had on our pages before – read on to find out more) have answered the latest variation of our #RoadTo… questions.

Scarlet Rebels

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re from the South Wales coast. So Wayne and Gary are from Llanelli, Wayne and Josh are from Swansea and Chris is from Porth Cawl. Josh is originally from London but moved down to Swansea last year

How long have you been playing together as a band?

Since about October 2017. V0iD slogged it for years before. Like 3 albums worth, over a good 12/13 year period. So we’ve definitely put the hard yards in.

Where does the name of the band come from?

Well, we were V0iD, but people found it hard to find our social media pages and music online, as well as being one of about 500 Voids. So we decided to make a change…

V0iD originated from Llanelli so I wanted to keep that link, the town has a world renowned rugby team called the Scarlets. “Rebels” is one of my favourite Tom Petty songs so we combined them. It was unique when combined so we went with that. We came up with loads but they were all used. It’s gone well though, people like it so all good!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We’re really melodic with big chunky riffs on a solid base of drums and bass. I think we’re a songwriting band, in terms of the song has to be key over a riff or guitar line. We’re not reinventing the wheel, we just want to make memorable melodic music that turns people on.

What’s your live show like? How are you hoping to impress the judges?

It’ll be energetic, passionate and melodic! We’ll be us and we’ll live and die by that! Hopefully they like it!

Have you been to Winter Storm before?

No, we haven’t! We’d love to.

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing StormBreakers?

We were asked if we’d be up for travelling that far for a half-hour slot before we were officially asked. We told our manager to say yes and then it was confirmed.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

Melodic, furious, passionate, fun and hopefully memorable.

Other than yourselves, who are you most looking forward to watch perform at StormBreakers?

It’s clichéd, but seriously, everyone! We know the Everyday Heroes boys, they’re superb and lovely boys too. Altered Sky we heard about ages ago since we worked with Kevin Donoghue at Native as I believe they were on his label for a while, they’re fantastic. Tomorrow is Lost have been on our radar for a while as so many people we know keep talking about them in glowing terms. RumRunners are new to us but we’ve checked them out and they sound great. It’s going to be a great night!

What’s been the highlight of the band’s career so far?

We opened for Anvil in February and we loved their film so much, so that was amazing. There’s been so many though; HRH in Ibiza, supporting Aaron Buchanan and Jared James Nichols was amazing too. We’re on this ride now though and we ain’t coming off for a while, we have plenty of stuff in the pipeline, so hopefully it keeps getting better.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I dunno, man, we had a guy telling us he wanted to kill us in Belgium before whilst we were playing. That was weird.

What are you working on at the moment/your plans for the rest of the year?

We’re working on Scarlet Rebels debut album, which will be out in 2019. And we have some awesome dates for the rest of this year including coming back to Scotland (The Cave in Paisley on December 15th and Church in Dundee December 16th, opening for the amazing Burnt Out Wreck).

We’ve got HRH AOR, Rockmantic, Butlins Giants of Rock all booked for next year so we have so much to look forward too…
