#RoadToBOA2018 – VOLA

As ever, we’re going to try and cover every single Jäger, New Blood and SOPHIE stage band before Bloodstock kicks off on August 9th. Your chance to check them out and start planning which bands to get there early for!

Trust us when we tell you that this is bound to result in some frustrating clashes because, as ever, there are some great bands on these three stages.

Our thanks to all the bands for taking the time out to answer our questions!

VOLA – Sophie Lancaster Stage, Sunday

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

75% Denmark and 25% Sweden.

How long have you been playing together as a band?

The first full constellation of the band was formed around 2007, with our first real EP, Homesick Machinery, being released in 2008. The lineup has changed quite a lot since then. Nicolai (bass) got in the band in 2009 and Adam (drums) joined in 2017.

Where does the name of the band come from?

That came from our former bass player. It means fly (as in flying) in Italian.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We love big choruses, but in order to keep ourselves entertained as musicians, we try to find ways to present these choruses that feel unconventional and engaging at the same time. We like it to be subtle though. If musical cleverness overshadows the joyful experience of a (hopefully) catchy melody, I think we have failed.

What’s your live show like?

Trying to sing normally with hair almost constantly stuck in my mouth.

Why are people going to watch you instead of another band?

To avoid standing next to that very drunk, and increasingly annoying friend, who wants to see the other band.

Have you played Bloodstock before? If so, when?

No, unfortunately not.

How/when did you find out that you’d be playing the SOPHIE stage?

I think it was in January. It was a blistering cold morning when a blood soaked dove entered our rehearsal space with a black note tied around its neck.

What sort of setlist can we expect?

Probably a setlist devoid of our softer material.

Which other band do you most hope you’re not clashing with so you can see them play?

Gojira.

What are you working on at the moment?

Putting the final touches on our second full-length release.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Being moved to tears by Paul McCartney singing songs from back when my parents were children.

Jager, Hobgoblin Ale, Red Bull, Kingstone Press Cider, Kaltenberg Beer or Bulleit Bourbon? And, yes, we’ll be counting all the votes!

Jager.
