Band of the Day: Silent Winter

Sunday is metal day. OK, so every day is metal day. So here’s some metal…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We come from a very beautiful city in the central part of Greece named Volos.

How did you meet?

Most of us (except from our vocalist and keyboardist who come from Athens and who we met during the band’s new active period) have known each other since the 90s. We played back then in different bands, but had met at live shows.

How long have you been playing as a band?

With the current line-up, a bit more than 2 years.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

There is nothing paranormal or any weird story behind the band’s name. We were formed at the heart of winter, so we kept the word “winter” as part of our name. Since in winter in a snowy land the city dies and nothing moves, this absolute silence made us think of “silent” as the second part of the band’s name.

What are your influences?

The main influences are Helloween, Stratovarius, Gamma Ray, Edguy, Judas Priest.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

I don’t think there is anything that makes us pioneers at something. We just wanted to give a fresh tone to power metal which is the music all of us in the band love and grew up with, covering the period of late 80’s to mid 90’s. We are nostalgic about this period of power metal.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

No. Every song has a different theme. This can be about the difficulties and the problems we face today, or an imaginary theme. It may be a theme from a video game we liked and so many more…

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Unfortunately, when a band is based outside the capital of Athens, when the members have many personal and family issues to take care of because we are not 18-25 and rebels anymore, our live shows have to be limited… What we choose is to play few but great/memorable shows. We have played with Nightrage, Skyclad and many other great bands and managed to play 5 live shows in the 2 years of our comeback.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Guitars are Solar and ltd 1000 deluxe, Fender bass, and a Peal drum kit with custom snare and kick pedal.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Unfortunately, the pandemic that hit the globe made us cancel 4 live shows and like everyone we are waiting to reorganise and rebuild for the future.

What are your plans for 2020?

At the moment in our plans is the vinyl release of our first album this coming September. We have also started composing new songs for the next album.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

One big dream for sure would be to share the stage with Helloween and Judas Priest, both legendary bands we grew up with.
