Band of the Day: Fyke

Californian emo/pop-punk outfit Fyke are hot off the release of their most recent album Nightmares. The group managed to clear a space in their hectic schedule to fill us in on the inner workings of the group and even a little bit of history. Initially, we only spoke to vocalist Enik, but before long, the entire band were taking part in the interview! Here’s what they had to say.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Enik: We’re from Los Angeles, CA.

How did you meet?

Enik: We all met playing in previous bands together.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Enik: We’ve technically only been together with our current line-up for a little over a year.

Before you get sick of being asked… Where does the band name come from?

FYKE: A Fyke is a large net used to capture masses of fish.

We named the band Fyke in hopes of capturing as many people as we can with our music!

What are your influences?

STEVEN: John Mayer, The 1975, Linkin Park, BMTH. Too many too name.

ENIK: Tons of 80’s electronic bands like OMD, Depeche mode, Anything Box, Radio Head, Max Martin, The Prodigy, Zedd, Knife Party, almost every Tooth & Nail band.

MIKEE: Underoath, Linkin Park, John Mayer, Kendrick Lamar, and like Steven said: too many to mention!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Enik: A mixture of electronic, rock, and pop infused with emotional imbalance.

GERARD: I think that our message makes us unique. We choose to spread positivity as our main purpose of music.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Enik: All our music is about current social issues.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played

MIKEE: Our live show has a really high energy throughout the whole set. We also try to make sure it sounds better than the record too!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

MIKEE: I saw The Chariot at the Glasshouse, and when Daniel Davidson counted in to start the very first song, the bass player threw his bass in the crowd and jumped in the pit on the complete opposite side of where his bass went. It was epic!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Fyke: Fender Guitars, PRS Guitars, Kemper/Darkglass Amps, Orange cabs, Pearl Drums/DW Snare, SHURE Wireless Mics, Ultimate Ears IEM’s, Bareknuckle Guitar Pickups, Evertune Bridges, Ableton Live.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Enik: Our show at KTOWN Night Market June 15-16TH in LA!

What are your plans for 2018?

MIKEE: A lot of touring and new music videos!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

MIKEE: This is a great question! This would only happen in another dimension and only in my dreams, but Linkin Park to open the show, us and Kendrick Lamar!

From a previous Band of the Day: How did you start creating music and why?

MIKEE: I started playing music when I was 13 years old. I would play at my church every Sunday and when I was in high school, that is when I got in my first band.

What is your favourite TV show theme?

STEVEN: Thriller, SciFi, Crime shows, Horror.

MIKEE: Definitely comedy. The Office for the win!!!
