Band of the Day: We Fall Slowly

Dutch indie rockers We Fall Slowly are looking to play the UK this year. Here’s a bit more about them in case they make it over here!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re from a relatively small town called Emmen in the North of the Netherlands.

How did you meet?

Some of us played together in several other bands in the past. And when Anton en Maarten wanted to start a new group this was just the best combination of people.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We started rehearsing in the fall of 2012 and started doing shows in the beginning of 2013. So this is our 5 year anniversary.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

First we chose the name Falling Slowly inspired by a Glenn Hansard song, but it wasn’t quite perfect. So we changed it to We Fall Slowly. In my mind it stands for life itself. Like SickBoy’s unifying theory of life from the movie Trainspotting.

What are your influences?

I cannot speak for everyone but these are my influences: Fugazi, Pixies, McLusky, At The Drive Inn, Mogwai, Faith No More and everything else from Mike Patton, Deftones, Biffy Clyro, Dinosaur Jr, Nirvana, Godspeed You! Black Emperor.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music is what you get when you mix the best of nineties grunge and post-hardcore bands like Fugazi and At The Drive In. But there’s also some indie you can detect in our music. It’s really tough to answer this question because there are sometimes a lot of different styles put in one song. But I reckon that is exactly what is unique about our musical style.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Mostly people and choices they make – it’s fascinating, you know? How is it that people make a certain choice in their life and do they think about the consequence and what effect it has  on themselves and the people around them? Also I take a lot of inspiration from choices I made when I was younger. But at the moment I see a shift in topics, it’s turning to 30-something kinda topics. I think I’m getting older

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Oh wow, I think I lost count of how many shows we did. What I try to do is give people a sense of the emotion we put in our songs. Something like a raw emotional energy is what a good We Fall Slowly song should have.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

One time I broke a piece of my teeth when I jumped in the crowd. Afterward I wasn’t really happy about that because going to the dentist is not one of my favorite things.

What are your plans for 2017?

We’re now rehearsing our new live show and writing new songs for our new EP which will release at the end of this year. Also I would love to do some UK shows this year. So if anyone wants to help us out that would be great!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be surpporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I would love to support At The Drive In and I would also love to put our label mates from Phoenix’Ashes on the bill. Great band, check them out.
