Interview: Pointless Fate

Guitarist Lars Alatalo of the Swedish Death / Doom Metal band Pointless Fate talked recently for Moshville about the band’s debut EP release Touching The Void.

You released Touching The Void recently. How do you feel about the release?

Now that some time has past since we released the EP we can look upon it with different eyes. I can hear some flaws in it of course but in general I am happy with it.

How much of a challenge was it to work on the EP?

All the songs were written and rehearsed long before we started recording so we didn’t really spend that much time in the studio. The drums and the guitar solos took the longest to get done because of all the details put into it.

How is the metal scene in your area these days?

There isn’t much of a metal scene in our hometown these days to be honest. Almost all of the gigs we do are outside of our town.

What is your opinion about the new wave of metal bands?

There’s some great new bands out there for sure, I always try to find new bands to listen to.

Touching The VoidCan you tell me something about your influences?

Well everyone in the band got their own influences and I think that creates a variation in the sound that I think is good. Of course we all have some influenes in common like Dio and Iron Maiden.

What are you listening these days?

Now im in a period when I listen to a lot of power metal and melodic heavy metal bands like Powerwolf, Astral Doors and Hammerfall. Bands that have influenced us but might not have as big impact on the music like Black Sabbath or Candlemass.

Your five favourite records of all time?

My five favourites in no particular order would be:

Queensryche – Operation: Mindcrime
Black Sabbath – Mob Rules
Savatage – Hall of the Mountain King
Rush – 2112
Iron Maiden – Brave New World

Can you tell me a little bit more about the gear you used to record “Touching The Void”?

We used our own guitars and drums when we recorded and our producer Björn Pettersson was kind enough to let us use his studio equipment.

Besides the release of the album, are there any other plans for the future?

We are currently working on some new songs and planning our next tour. Hopefully their will be some gigs in the near future.
