Classic Covers: The Glorious Sons – Runaway

Before you get too excited/exasperated (delete as appropriate) at the prospect of yet another act covering the Del James’s song, you can rest assured it isn’t. Instead, it’s Kanye West. Yup. All I can really tell you about Mr West is his daft quote about rap artists being the new rock stars and Steel Panther’s not-so-subtle (even by their standards) poke at him. But The Glorious Sons appear to be fans as you can see from this interpretation of his “Runaway”.

The track was filmed at Fiction studios and is the first of a series of stripped down videos to be released over the coming weeks. Brett Emmons (vocals) comments:

Koster is a gigantic Kanye fan and he’s been covering the song for years. We played it in a church once together, and my voice just kind of worked with the song. I can remember listening to My Beautiful Dark Twisted Fantasy and watching the short film all the time in university. It is by far my favourite Kanye album. I had never heard rap sound like that before. In my opinion, this album is one of the most important of the 21st century, and Runaway is one of the most perfect pop songs ever written.
