Headline Act: Kilonova

We’ve had Kilonova plastered all over these pages in the past for the very good reason that they’re really bloody good. With some new stuff on the horizon, it’s about time we made sure that anyone who hadn’t already heard about them heard about them. Take it away, vocalist Ellen…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

The band is from Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK.

How did you meet?

Jonny (guitarist) and Joe (bassist) knew each other from the university rock society and one night decided to drunkenly start a band while on a night out. After that they started looking for a drummer and singer online and it wasn’t long until they came across Steve (drummer) from the ‘join my band’ website and myself (singer) from a Facebook group. Got to say, after only living in Newcastle for 3 months and then auditioning for a band it was quite a good way to meet people.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Five years.

Before you get sick of being asked… Where does the band name come from?

They already had the name when I joined, it’s about two stars colliding and creating the heaviest elements in the universe.

What are your influences?

So for me I have a lot of different influences and they are always changing. Right now I’m really into Knocked Loose as I have the same sort of high scream as Brian, so it’s interesting to see how he uses it over a different genre than what I do. I will also always be massively influenced by Maria from In this Moment. She was the first woman in metal that I was introduced to so she has a special place in my heart.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Melodic thrash metal, with some punk and groove mixed in there as well. I’d say what makes us unique is that we have all come from quite different metal backgrounds to merge into the sound that is Kilonova.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

On the next EP Moment of Clarity the lyrics all revolve around something being taken from you, be that by life itself, a person, and fighting back against that loss. This EP is quite a personal one for each of the band members as we all have something we can really relate to with each song.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Kilonova shows are pretty wild, we love high energy and we always love getting the crowd involved with us.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Jonny and I have a habit of jumping off stuff at gigs. Jonny jumped off a speaker for our friends Boz during their Bloodstock set. I generally have a love for finding the highest place and jumping from it at most of our shows. With the venue’s permission that is…

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

I’m really boring, I just use a wireless shure SM58 kit.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

New single and video “Fragments” is dropping on the 03-03-23 for hype for the new EP Moment of Clarity which will be coming out 05-05-23. Available on all platforms so make sure you’re streaming it!

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

Release new music and play some awesome shows.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Headline would be Kreator, then us, finally Cast in Tephra; a local deathcore band. Absolutely lovely guys to work with and always put on a fantastic show.
