Headline Act: Erebor

All the best things in the world come from the North East of England – stotties, Newcastle Brown Ale, Alan Shearer, Auf Wiedersehen, Pet, me… I have a feeling we should be adding Erebor to that list. Here’s the band to tell us why! And if their words don’t convince you then maybe Big Man Tyrone can do a better job.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are primarily based in Durham, but our vocalist lives in Gateshead near Newcastle.

How did you meet?

We have all been friends for a very long time, going to school and college together. The drummer and the bassist are brothers, and we met our new vocalist online and then asked him to audition.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We’ve been playing as a band since 2017 but went on a four-year hiatus after our original vocalist left. With our new vocalist we’ve been playing as a group for just over 6 months.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We are named after the mountain in The Hobbit that the dwarfs take Bilbo to. We understand that it’s usually power metal bands or black metal bands that use Lord of the Rings style names, but we just liked it and rolled with it.

What are your influences?

Lots of tech death, but primarily Nile, Rivers of Nihil, Obscura, Ne Obliviscaris, Black Crown Initiate… stuff in that vein.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We would say we do a nice mix between songs that sound like old school tech death (Death, Atheist etc.), and new school tech death (Rivers of Nihil, Fallujah etc.), along with songs that are somewhere in between. We also think we have some progressive flair as well, with some Ne Obliviscaris and Opeth vibes.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Our first album was very much H.P Lovecraft influenced so there’s a lot of cosmic horror elements in there with old ancient cities and strange visions and dreams.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We’ve played quite a few shows ranging back to 2017, we’ve opened for Suffocation locally at a venue called The Riverside, and we recently opened for Monument of Misanthropy at The Little Buildings. We’ve only just started up again, but we have had a good reception with people saying that we sound good live, we’ve played well and that we play a good set. There was a lot of headbanging which was nice to see!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Not so much to be honest, we probably need more gigs with our new vocalist under our belt before the real hare brained stuff starts happening!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Mia (guitar): Ibanez RGD7521 Model PB-DSF and a line six helix.

Jordan (guitar): Ibanez Axion RGD71ALMS Fan Fret and a Mooer Electronics GE250 for his floor rack amp.

Tom (drums): Meinl Cymbals, Wincent Sticks, Trick pedals and Evans heads. He would also love to have some Sonor drums but needs to do some saving for those!

Valentine (vocals): SM58 Mic.

Will (bass): Dingwall NG3 6 String. For pedals it’s a Darkglass Microtubes B7K Ultra, a Darkglass Hyper Luminal Compressor and a TC Electronic BH500 amp.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

At the moment we are promoting our last album, and we are going to be releasing some shirts and CDs. We also did a bit of promoting with Big Man Tyrone which was pretty fun to do.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

We are currently writing new music for an upcoming release, also we are trying to play as many shows as possible in different places.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I think we would all love to support Nile as we are all big fans of their music, and you can hear their influences in our music. As for a band that would open for us, it’s hard to choose as there are lots of good bands in Newcastle, but I think we would go with Cast in Tephra. They are good friends of ours and we have known them for a long time so we would take them along on tour if we were famous.
