Band of the Day: Higgs Field

The science nerd in me likes this band for some reason…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are Higgs Field and we’re from a little town at the bottom of South Australia called Mount Gambier. A 2 minute drive to any of the pubs, no matter where you live. 20 minutes from the beach and a quick 4 hour drive to the cities of Melbourne and Adelaide.

How did you meet?

Well that’s a bit mixed. Kyle and Liam met in high school and knew of each other, always friendly but didn’t become friends until a few years after. Frosty and Dylan met through the music scene, being in a few different bands together. We all met through the music scene and got along way too well! We’re all different but always laughed at shit together and I think we all just enjoyed hanging out!

How long have you been playing as a band?

Well Liam and Kyle started as a nameless band in August 2018, we actually wrote the riffs for “No Escape” the first time we ever caught up! It was a magical moment. We were like “fuck… my guy! You’re my guy.” Dylan and Frosty joined in mid 2019 and we’ve been writing tunes together since.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

This is a bit trippy, there’s a few reasons why we named the band Higgs Field. I’d just suggest for anyone who’s interested to find out, to research it themselves. I’ll add this though. We named the band that to inspire self education and a different way to think. The Higgs Field is the one thing that scientifically connects us to everything. The world’s not a good place and it’s full of fucking idiots but depending how you choose to live and act, your world will be different.

What are your influences?

That’s such a hard question. We all listen to different music and had different influences growing up. I think the safest thing to say is between all of us we listen to everything and everything has an influence. One thing we all have in common, is we all love bands that just do their own thing. Even when we’re all writing music, we don’t get together and say “Hey let’s write a song like this.” We just start playing and if it feels right, it’ll stick and we’ll work on it. We don’t tell each other what to do, we might work on a part we’re stuck on together but everyone has their own style to bring in, so we don’t mess around with that too much.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We can’t describe it very well. It’s different. We put it as Progressive Rock / Punk / Metal. Go listen to it. You dudes can tell us what genre we are. We don’t really care, We’re just writing music we haven’t heard before. As for what makes us unique, different from every other band out there. Have you listened to it yet?

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We have a bit of a dual lyricist thing happening, eh, sort of. So Dylan writes very intelligent lyrics and Liam writes very cryptic lyrics. It’s all subjective. Whatever you think it’s about is what it’s probably about. There’s hidden meanings in everything. Good luck trying to figure it out.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We’ve never seen it. We’ve always been to busy doing stupid stuff like playing, so we haven’t even seen it! Covid has been a massive pain in the arse. I don’t think it’s a listen symptom but it should be. We’ve got a gig coming up soon, where people will be able to jump in and watch but to get a feel of the band, you’ve got to see it live.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

I think everyone has their own stories but when you go to a show on an illicit substance, you can either have the best time or the worst time. If you’re going to do that, be safe and be aware of the people around you. Soundgarden was a hell of a show to watch. Also if you are in a crowd full of people… keep your fingers out of your arse.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Liam uses a custom built Orion GFP made by a dude in Sydney with a Fender 150w Mustang IV. Awesome tone man, fucking awesome.

Frosty uses play a Pearl export series 3 kit with A custom zildjian cymbals.

Kyle uses a Fender Precision Bass and use a 100w Orange Combo Bass Amp.

Dylan uses the voice of a European God, ripped straight out of the throat of greatness.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

On the 1/1/21 we’ll be releasing Higgs Field – Paracusia. We’ve also got the singles “The Source” and “Guilty” coming out in the lead up to it. Have a listen to it and let us know. Always keen to hear from music lovers, always. Follow us on our socials like facebook, instagram, ect. If you want to find out where we’re playing.

What are your plans for the next 6 months or so?

We’re normal dudes, so we’ll just be sitting back, drinking beers, mowing the lawns, reading scientific journals, walking the dog, writing music and gigging locally around Australia. Maybe rip a fart in an elevator if the situation calls for it. Who knows man, zombies might happen.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Dude! Well that’s a hard question. We would like have a local band called The Stiff Nips Open for us. They’re a great bunch of dudes and sound fucking sick live. Higgs Field, then Cog. Cog’s one of the greatest prog band of all time. I would love that show!
