It’s always nice to feature a band who are from “just down the road”, so welcome Crashes to our Band of the Day alumni…
Simple things first – where are you guys from?
We are from Inverclyde – Greenock, Gourock and Port Glasgow to be precise.
How did you meet?
We met because the project already existed in the form of demos and bedroom recordings, but needed members to make it a real thing. Let’s just say fate brought us together, to keep it short and sweet.
How long have you been playing as a band?
We have been together as a band for around 2 years.
Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?
To be completely honest, it just felt totally right and we felt it fit the music we make perfectly. We are still astonished that no one else had claimed it already. People we know have recently started using it as an adjective – when one of our pals saw Rory’s new drum kit for the first time (it’s pink perspex) he said ‘it’s totally Crashes’, which is an odd but cool thing.
What are your influences?
I don’t think anyone would ever make a match between our individual influences and the way the band actually sounds. A mixture of Deftones, QOTSA, Ben Howard, While She Sleeps, Enter Shikari, Turnover and Paramore would probably sound like a disgusting, confused mess.
Describe your music. What makes you unique?
We play what is effectively pop music with delay pedals, heavy guitars & drums, and the occasional riff. We think a factor that helps make us unique is that we don’t pay any attention to what’s popular or fashionable or try to sound a certain way.
Do you have any particular lyrical themes?
The lyrics really do try to inspire happiness and hope, even though they touch on themes like self-loathing, low confidence, time slipping away and inferiority. I always try to make sure that the overarching theme is hope and positivity.
What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Our live show is a lot of fun, we love it when people sing along and have a dance. We’ve played roughly 50 shows.
What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?
Nothing particularly wild has ever happened at any of our shows, unless you count our utterly atrocious between-song chat.
What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
Rory plays a Ludwig kit and Sabian cymbals, Corey plays Gibson Les Paul guitars and Orange amplification, Gary plays a Fender P and a Markbass amp rig and I (Craig) play Fender guitars and Marshall amps. There is also a disgusting monetary value worth of guitar effects pedals between us.
What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
At the moment, we are plugging our new EP, titled Something’s Wrong. Which is out RIGHT NOW on all major streaming platforms. We are also supporting Dream State at King Tut’s Wah Wah Hut on April 9th.
What are your plans for 2019?
For the rest of 2019, we want to play as many shows as possible, get our music out to as many people as possible and get as far afield as possible. Also a wee festival would be nice. Also writing new material.
If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!
We would love to support Biffy Clyro, at the Hydro, with Metallica opening. Gotta give the little guy a chance, eh? (A complete cop-out, due to it being too hard to pick between the many amazing bands we play shows with on a regular basis. Also, we wouldn’t want to offend anyone by suggesting we should be above them on a bill, even given the fictional nature of this scenario)
