Band of the Day: Materia

Ahead of playing Mammoth Fest and a hand-full of UK shows supporting Krysthla we had a chat with Polish metal band Materia.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Szczecinek in Poland.

How did you meet?

We were in the same primary school so our paths crossed a long time ago!

How long have you been playing as a band?

We started playing when we were 10 years old and played for 2 years until we needed to take a break due to health problems. We started up again when we were 17 years old.

Where does the band name come from?
In Polish “Materia” means matter; everything you can see, smell, hear, touch. We chose that name too because music is matter too; you cannot touch it but you can hear and feel it.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We write about what we are feeling; heartbreak, politics, religion and addiction, as well as nature.

Describe your music – what makes you unique?

A difficult question! I think we are walking the line between a couple of styles; our sound is close to metal but you can also find other styles within it. It is difficult to describe our sound, so the best way is to come to one of our shows and see for yourself!

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?
Another hard question! I belive that what you can see in our show is passion, lots of energy and a lot of hapiness. We have played a lot of shows so it is hard to say exactly, but from the beginning of 2008 until now I would say that we have played around 800-1000 shows.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

At Woodstock I took our guitarist into my arms while he was playing a solo and then jumped over the stage. I saw a guy on YouTube do a backflip with his guitar while he was playing…I have to learn how to do that!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?
We are endorserd by Skervesen Custom Guitars from Poland which are really awesome. Mihu uses a Eden Nemesis bass, TD has a Peavey 5150 and Adi has a EVH 5150. Marcel uses a Tama starclassic shellset and Turkish cymbals.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We are promoting our album We Are Materia. This is our third European tour with this album. We are currently recording our next album which will be released around April next year.

What are your plans for the rest of 2017?

After this short EU tour we have some shows in Poland throughout November and early December, and we plan to record new material before Christmas.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you?
To open for us I would chose Mentally Blind, from Poland, and for a headliner I have so many it is hard to choose…probably Meshuggah, In Flames, Korn or Whitechapel.

Any parting words of wisdom?
Go to live music shows, love life and don’t give up!
