Single Review: Hey Colossus – The Mirror

UK rock band Hey Colossus release their 13th studio album Dances/Curses in November of this year via bassist Joe Thomson’s Wrong Speed Records.

Their first single has been shared with the world. “The Mirror” features… hold on, wait for it… a certain Mr Mark Lanegan. Hey Colossus’ musical style is well suited to the vocals of Lanegan. Over the years he has been part of Screaming Trees, appeared on QOTSA records and collaborated with Isobel Campbell, Duke Garwood, The Gutter Twins and appeared on “Above” by Mad Season.

“The Mirror” burns slowly. It’s desert rock as Mark Lanegan makes his appearance with his gruff, whiskey-charred spoken word carrying the path of beats. Lanegan’s voice is a voice no other can imitate. The two forms work together. It isn’t life changing music, but just allows us to hear the birth of a Hey Colossus and Mark Lanegan offspring.

They also have three gigs announced for 2021:

  • Manchester – 19th March, The White Hotel in Salford.
  • Bristol – 20th March, Headfirst
  • London – 3rd April, The Lexington.
