It’ll come as no surprise that here at The Moshville Times we generally love it hard and heavy, but sometimes you just want a band to bring the party, ya know? And that’s exactly what Dig Lazarus do in abundance with their third EP Outlaw. Although, “Well technically it’s our fourth, but we don’t like to talk about the first one,” according to Jack Cotterill, the band’s drummer.
Hailing from Leicestershire, these balls out rock and rollers consist of Ash Tustain (guitar/vocals), Atticus Hall-McNair (bass/backing vocals) and the aforementioned Jack Cotterill (drums/percussion). Wrapped in their trademark sugar skull design, this time with a pirate twist, I felt compelled to crack open the rum before giving it a spin.
Kicking off with fat riffed “Hands Off”, catchy hooks and funky bass lines have my feet tapping and head nodding in approval. Distorted vocals and anarchic lyrics give it an almost punk rock vibe which comes to a powerful crescendo provided by Jack’s militant drumming and Ash’s melodic licks.
“White Ryno” again thrusts out a hypnotic riff, chugging bass lines and tribal drumming that has me on my feet. It’s an out and out rock and roll track that you can’t help getting hooked into.
A change in pace then for the heavier (and personal favourite) “Salacious”. Filthy bass lines and chunky guitar tones give this track a darker, grungier feel; imagine Marilyn Manson crashing a Status Quo gig and you’re about there.
Title track “Outlaw” brings the groove. Bluesy riffs aplenty swamp this number giving it a fuller sound and Atticus’ backing vocals really coming to the fore, complementing Ash sublimely. Sensuous, heavy tones build and build resulting in Ash shredding his guitar to within an inch of its life. This is a huge number that’ll have you singing along, air guitar in hand.
The hidden track had me giggling and reaching for the tequila (I won’t spoil the surprise!). This EP shows how much the band have progressed and developed their versatile rock sound; they certainly brought the party. If you want to be part of it you can dance the night away and get your own copy at the launch show this Friday 30.06.17 at the Musician, Leicester or follow their links for the usual downloads and media sites.
