100-Word Review: Goatwhore – Constricting Rage of the Merciless (and new video!)

goatwhore-constricting-rage-of-the-mercilessAs ever, playing catchup and missing release dates but for those who’ve not already picked it up here are a few quick words about Goatwhore‘s new release Constricting Rage of the Merciless. It came out on July 8th, and don’t forget that they’re touring with Dying Fetus later this year.

Constricting Rage of the Merciless is ten tracks of unrelenting, head-pounding, skull-smashing blackened death metal. Recorded to analogue tape rather than the easily-manipulated digital media usually used these days, it has a rougher edge and a more “live” feel to it than many of its contemporaries.

There’s an overriding sense of anger and doom throughout, with belters like “Heaven’s Crumbling Walls of Pity” and “Schadenfreude” being personal favourites. Occasional soaring solos are quickly swallowed within the dark, thrashy mass and the pace never lets up. “Baring Teeth For Revolt” kicks off almost like an old-school thrash anthem.

Should slay live.
