Band of the Day: The Pits

Always great to see a band from Newcastle on here, and… wait… Australia? Pff. Not as good as the original (and I’ve been to both so I’m allowed to say that even if I am biased!). Still, they make up for it by making a brilliant racket!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re from Newcastle, Australia, or near enough to it.

How did you meet?

A few of us were friends through high school, the rest met through music. Newcastle isn’t a small town but once you start playing music you meet everyone pretty quickly.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Our first gig was in April 2017, so around 3 and a half years.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

It comes from an album by The Venetia Fair.

What are your influences?

Our big influences are 80s hair metal, Queen and late 90s early 2000’s emo/punk. A lot of people say we are Queen mixed with Panic! At the Disco which are 2 of our bigger influences.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our sound, having 7 guys all from different backgrounds really helps create a unique sound. We also love to change it up for most of our songs so we switch genres a lot and through in a lot of covers.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Generally we like to tell a story with all of our songs, most of our songs have a bit more of a horror theatre theme, Nightmare Before Christmas crossed with Wicked is probably the easiest way to describe our lyrics.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Too many shows to count at this point. We all wear red British Grenadier style jackets on stage, we run into the crowd and have a can-can line at the end of one of our sillier songs and we dance like there is no tomorrow. We don’t like to go out and just play our music, we want to go out and put on a show every time.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Our guitarist once tried to spin his guitar around his neck at an outdoor gig, his strap wasn’t on properly the guitar flew off into the mud, Mitch just stood in shock looking at his guitar for a bit before going and getting it.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Pearl drums with Istanbul cymbals. For guitar we use an Ibanez rga guitar Orange thunderverb head Orange 4×12 cab. Our bass player has an Ibanez SR705 bass and will play through any amp he can find. Our trumpet player will use either a Bach Stradivarius or an old Starling he can’t identify. And Hayden and Boyd aren’t sure about their instruments, they were internet finds that turned out to be gold.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

Over the next 12 months we plan on bringing out a new EP, this one will be a bit different to what we have done before but people will love it more than the last one I’m sure.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Would love to have Bug Hunter open the show, we don’t know them/haven’t met them but I’m a big fan so it would be cool to meet them. And to close the show someone like Panic! At the Disco would be ideal.
