Band of the Day: Madre Sun

You may have heard of Michael Schenker. Well, now you need to be hearing about his son, Tyson, and his own band. We give you… Madre Sun.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Tyson: Matt and Eduardo are from Sao Paulo, Brazil and I am from London. We all live in London at the moment.

How did you meet?

Tyson: Matt and Eduardo had moved to london to work on music here with their previous band Cavina. I had recently started working with Eduardo at a motorbike store and he mentioned that him and his brother were playing a gig in camden and I should come down. I went to the show and met Matt for the first time and we decided to have a jam one day and thats how the band started,

How long have you been playing as a band?

Tyson: The band started rehearsing together in January 2019

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Tyson: The name came from a brainstorming session we all had one night in Soho, London. I think it is a good representation of the mix in the band being from Brazil and UK.

What are your influences?

Tyson: Our influences range from blues to metal.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Tyson: Our music is influenced by what we all listen to, but we take from what we have learnt and make it our own by putting our own energy into it.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Matt: All songs are about situations or reflections that we all passed through.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Tyson: The live shows capture the raw energy that we have in the rehearsal room. We like to keep it simple and straight up rock n roll. We have played just under 10 shows. We had planned to do a tour of Brazil this October but due to the pandemic this had to be cancelled.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Matt: Our shows are always the wildest thing for us.

Eduardo: Besides crowd surfing was jumping off a very expensive piano as the end of a gig.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Tyson: I use a Gibson Flying V with an Orange AD30 30w Head.

Matt: Gibson Les Paul Classic with an Laney GH 50L head.

Eduardo:Gibson Grabber & Fender Precision Bass

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?
Tyson: We released our Debut EP called The Speed of Light in July and have just released the video for the song Black River. We are really proud of this EP and the response so far as been amazing.

What are your plans over the next six months or so?

Tyson: During the quarantine we have written our next album, so at the moment we are looking for a place to record. The new songs are sounding amazing and we can’t wait to get them recorded. We are desperate to play live shows at the moment but sadly due to the pandemic it’s gonna be longer than we like.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Tyson: Led Zeppelin, Madre Sun, Clutch.

Matt: AC/DC, Madre Sun, Rancid
