Band of the Day: Wasting Time

I could try and shove a bad pun or a twist on the band name into this intro, but that would just be wasting time. … … Dammit.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We are from Toronto, Ontario, Canada.

How did you meet?

Vlad played a solo acoustic for the first time in years at the beginning of 2017 and Mike happened to be in attendance. The performance took place at a bar called Stop, Drop & Roll, which was owned by their mutual friend. They didn’t get a chance to meet that day, but their mutual friend provided Vlad with Mike’s contact info after finding out that Vlad wanted to restart Wasting Time and needed a bassist. Mark and Mikey joined the band on lead guitar and drums respectively earlier this year after scouring through various online musician ads, and have both been a great fit.

How long have you been playing as a band?

The original formation of the band started at some point in the early 2000s and broke up in 2009. The current formation of the band started in 2017 and has been going strong since!

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

One of Vlad’s elementary school teachers told him to stop wasting the class’ time with his disruptive behaviour or else he’d end up working at McDonald’s for the rest of his life. This memory clearly left an impression on Vlad as the years went on, and the name “Wasting Time” stuck. Vlad has yet to work a day at McDonald’s too!

What are your influences?

Green Day, Alkaline Trio, Nirvana, Against Me!, Strung Out, Elvis, The Beatles

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our music sounds like four dudes in Toronto working up a sweat and pouring our hearts out into 3 minute spurts of noise. We think it sounds like pop-punk at times.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Our lyrics don’t have particular themes. All words are written by Vlad and are either based on personal experiences, experiences of others around him, or sometimes outside sources of inspiration such as books, movies or video games. We do have a good number of love songs in our repertoire though!

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We try to have fun when we play live and to mostly have a high energy show with a couple of ridiculous, but also light-hearted jokes tossed in between the noise. We also try to engage with the crowd whenever we can.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

We once played an acoustic set at a poorly attended show out of town and noticed a guy in the crowd sticking his fist in his mouth repeatedly.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Our main gear consists of a Fender Stratocaster, Gibson SG, Fender Jazz Bass and a Yamaha drunk kit.

What are your plans for the next 12 months?

We released a new single on July 24th called, “My Limited French”, have a new album for the fall, and live shows whenever we’re allowed to play in public again.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d love to support Green Day since they’re a band we all grew up listening to and still are fans of. We’d also include a fellow hometown band, Hangtime, on the bill.
