Band of the Day: Sweet N’ Juicy

Our first Band of the Day made up entirely of fruit. I think. There are a fair few to check but I think that would have stuck in my mind.

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Juicy: We’re all from different places, but right now we live in Portland, Oregon.

How did you meet?

Sweet (the banana): I met Juicy (the strawberry) in a strawberry patch far away from where I grew up.  I wanted to go traveling the country in search of new flavors of sounds, and when I met Juicy I knew I wanted to do something cool. After I convinced Juicy to go on the road with me we traveled to a farm in the south and met N’ (Nefertitipharoahsandramundusifilopolis the pineapple). Now we’re all cruising.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Juicy: Probably around 3 years now. Sweet and I jammed a bit before we met N’, but it didn’t feel like home until he joined up.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

N’: It’s our names, silly!

What are your influences?

Sweet: We like Prince, Chaka Khan, Billy Preston, Ween, RHCP, Frank Zappa, all the stuff that makes you wanna dance!

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Sweet: Our music is just to party to. We don’t want to impress any ideas into you or sway your opinion. Fruit don’t care who you vote for. We just want you to party. Probably being fruit is unique, but we also have a sound that’s our own. We call it songwriter funk.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Juicy: Mmhmm! We write songs about partying.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

N’: Oh man, I don’t know how many we’ve played, but we’re definitely playing more and more these days. We have super high energy shows and everyone dances the whole time. People party and go crazy. It’s a blast!

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

N’: This one time an older lady danced for the first time in her life. That was cool. Also, Juicy performed the ceremony at a wedding a few months ago. We ran a variety show for a while, too, and things always got really crazy at the end of the night. If you want to know about that you should probably just hit us up.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Sweet: I play a custom “Fleet” bass by LH Mcurdy.

N’: I play a PDP kit.

Juicy: I play a Nord Electro 4. That poor thing.

What are your plans for what remains of 2019?

Sweet: We’re gonna finish out the year in style. We have a bunch of shows in November, and plan to play in December a bunch, too. Next year we have a West Coast tour in the US during all of February that should be really cool.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Juicy: I’d LOVE to open up for Ween! Those guys are absolutely mad-dog crazy awesome musicians and seem really cool to hang with.

Sweet: If we could have a friend open for us, it would probably be our friends at DTW in Eugene. Those guys rock!
