Band of the Day: Oceans Apart

Thanks today go to Oceans Apart, busy promoting their debut album and single…

Simple things first — Where are you guys from?

Leicester, UK.

How did you meet?

Three members are brothers and the other two members have been long life friends, so it was a very natural process after previous bands split up.

How long have you been playing as a band?

7 months.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We’re really big Richard Marx fans… Just kidding! Nothing really in particular, we were floating ideas around. Liked “Oceans”, however, there was quite a big band with that name already, so “Oceans Apart” was born!

What are your influences?

We have a wide range of influences, from bands like Don Broco, You Me At Six and Bring Me The Horizon to bands like Biffy Clyro, Ghost and Enter Shikari.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

A Dark Rainbow… It’s aggressive and heavy yet like a rainbow it makes people feel good with its melodic and catchy vibes. We’re not afraid to try different styles. One song could be heavy rock with breakdowns and the next with electronic beats and big drops.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We have plenty of different themes we sing about. But some main ones are ancient war and a big thing for us is getting the message of mental health and addiction out there.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

Full of energy, lots of crowd interaction and just good party vibes. We’re a pretty new band so we’ve played 3 shows so far, all have been a blast.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Well, I’ve seen a middle age man dressed up as a cowboy crowdsurf. Pretty wild…

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Drummer plays SJC and Zildjian. Guitars used are a Music Man Stingray bass, PRS SE, Gibson Firebird, Epi Custom Les Paul, Squier modified Tele. Singer uses a Shure Digital wireless microphone.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our debut single with a music video is out, which is called “Talk Of The Town”. We have an album coming out this month, which will also be promoted with a headline show at the O2 Academy, Leicester on the 20th April.

What are your plans for 2019?

To promote our album far and wide, play as many shows across the UK and hopefully get some festival slots and tour supports along the way!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you?

So many bands we’d love to support but as a communal answer it’d probably have to be Bring Me The Horizon (we had a great time opening for As It Is a couple of weeks ago though!). If we had to choose a band to open for us, I’d personally pick a friend’s band called Switchdown… great guys, would be a laugh to be on the road with them.
