Band of the Day: Norphlet

Who says long-distance relationships can’t work? Here are Norphlet to prove us all wrong…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We’re both from Waco, Texas, but are currently operating long-distance, with Cody still in Waco and Taylor in Los Angeles, California.

How did you meet?

We met during auditions for a previous project.  We really clicked, so after it disbanded we decided to continue playing and making music together.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We started making music as Norphlet in late 2017.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Norphlet is the tiny town in Arkansas where Cody’s family is from.

What are your influences?

We draw influence and inspiration from numerous things, both musical and non-musical, like books and film.  We’re into everything from alternative and indie to folk and extreme metal. Some of our favorites are The Wonder Years, The Menzingers, Porcupine Tree, Elliott Smith, and Say Anything.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

It definitely fits under the rock umbrella, but we don’t like to limit ourselves.  We’ve been able to seamlessly combine our favorite elements from different genres and sub-genres and use them to craft cohesive, exciting songs full of memorable moments.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We draw primarily from personal experience as a way to understand and cope with life.  Recurring themes would be general introspection and existentialism.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We’ve yet to play live due to distance and being a two-piece, but plan to change that later this year!

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Cody plays Fender guitars, Peavey amps, Black Harbor strings, and One Three Audio cables.

Taylor plays Gretsch drums, Zildjian cymbals, and XCEL sticks.

What are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We just released our new EP, The Weatherman! It’s available everywhere, so go check it out!

What are your plans for 2019?

We’ll continue to promote the new EP, as well as work on getting out to play live.  We’re also currently hard at work writing our first full-length that we hope to have out mid-next year!

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We feel we’d fit well right between The Hotelier and The Wonder Years.
