Band of the Day: Atomic Kavemen

We’ve got a band so new they’ve not played a single gig yet. Let’s see how they get on with our daily questions!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

We all live just east of San Francisco.

How did you meet?

James (drums) knew each of us from different places. He put the band together. Good god, it smells in here.

How long have you been playing as a band?

Recordings have been going on for months but we only met and started playing together as a band this past October.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

Literally every other name in the universe had been used at some point, by someone, somewhere. Atomic Kavemen was the only name left.

What are your influences?

Todd (bass) likes all kinds of heavy metal. George (guitar) loves Rush and the Melvins. James loves AC/DC. And Morey (vocals) likes weird noises.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

We get a lot of comparisons to great bands of yesteryear, but there aren’t many playing heavy rock like this today. Pass the salt, baby.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

We like creepy things, bad days, sour relationships, that kind of thing.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We are as anxious to find out as you are! We haven’t actually played out yet.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

James took off his top and did a crazy little dance during practice once.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

George has a squire. Todd plays with his fingers. James uses normal drums. Morey has a microphone from the bargain bin at Radio Shack.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

Our all new, handy dandy, eight song opus! Cures whatever ails you! Get it on our Bandcamp.

What are your plans for 2019?

I think I’m going to be sick.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

I would love to have Danzig as the headliner, but playing the Legacy set of a few years back. It was a retrospective of all his past works. The opening band would be the Partridge Family.

From previous Band of the Day Ruben Hultman: what phase of the creation process do you find most difficult and how do you cope with that?

Writing lyrics is hard. I’ve tried to shoehorn poems written beforehand, and it doesn’t work for me. I cope with it like anything that’s difficult, I just do it.

And from Oceans: why?

Buddy Hackett. I have no idea.
