Single Review: Adur – “The Silhouette”

The first single to be released from Brighton-based post-hardcore/post-metallers Adur is a gorgeously enveloping track teeming with verve and raw emotion. Consisting of members from Sea Bastard, Johnny Truant and the sadly disbanded Aerosol Jesus, Adur arrive carving out a deeply emotive sound of their own, combining crunchy riffs, shoegaze infused melodies and piercingly affecting vocals.

The first single to be released from their upcoming debut album We Fail To Love Ourselves, “The Silhouette” opens with a raw, concrete thick riff that chugs along forcefully as vocalist Oli Melville (formerly of Aerosol Jesus) pours out his heart via his harrowingly heartfelt vocals. There’s some relatively calmer passages too, as a gorgeous chorus that evokes Deftones at their most ethereal manages to cut through the chaos, offering relief before the track reaches its devastating climax. Indeed the outro is the track’s emotional zenith, building to an almighty crescendo as Melville screams “Why won’t you comfort me” over a crushing barrage of post metal riffage, thunderous drums and keening, rumbling bass.

If their upcoming debut is even a fraction as powerful as this, we could be in store for something truly special.
