Band of the Day: Under The Skin

Under The Skin are another new band to us – and that’s what we’re all about. Have a read, find out what they have to say about themselves then check ’em out!

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Hi! We are from France – Paris, to be exact.

How did you meet?

We were in a band for 7 years before this project. When that band stopped we made a new project together, as a duo.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We started this project at the end of 2015. We were working in ‘secret’. We released everything at the same time, the band, our first EP, and a video clip in March 2016.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

We sat around a table drinking some glasses of whisky and we tried to find a name… we wanted a name composed, with a meaning to us. We found the name in few minutes.

What are your influences?

Music, any kind of music. I listen to punk music, to electro, pop, rock from the 70’s to the 90’s… but bands like Incubus, Faith No More, Skunk Anansie, Radiohead or the Foo Fighters are important in our music.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

Our awesome sense of humour ? Haha! Well, we work really easily together, the songwriting is really fluid, we also spend a lot of time trying to find melodies. Maybe that is what people like. They can feel it.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Not really, songs can talk about almost everything. I don’t talk about politics because there are a lot of bands that do it better than me. I write all the lyrics… I can talk about feelings, situations that I came through, people that I meet…

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

We are very punctilious with our live shows. It is just us two who write the songs, but we have 3 other guys with us on stage. We really want to transcribe the same things that we record, with all details. We also spend a lot of time working on the light show. We have worked for years with a young light engineer, Bertille Friedrich. She is very talented and she really understands what we want. She create a unique atmosphere on stage with tons of stuff, it’s definitely a big plus to have her in our team. Some shows are coming but for now we have played only one show as Under the Skin, but Yann and me have played a lot of gigs together. We still have the same complicity. It’s easy for us to be on stage together.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

For one of our shows in our past band, some of our fans prepared a little surprise! In the middle of the show while I was singing I saw a rain of bras coming on stage. One of them was hanging on Yann’s guitar… It made me laugh so much that I was barely able to finish the song.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

We want to make it as simple as possible. I play with a Fender Telecaster and a multi FX pedal Pod HD 300. I also have an electro acoustic guitar, Lag T100ACE.  If there is an amp in the room I play with it, if not I plug in DI. Yann does the same, he has the same Pod HD 300, and he plays with a guitar PRS Tremonti.

What are your plans for the rest of 2016 / 2017?

We have recorded a new song and we are working on the video clip. It’s coming soon. We are also working to book a show, so we are going to play more shows. We would like to record a second EP before the end of 2017… or maybe a full album, we don’t know yet.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting…

Let’s make it big! Incubus first, then Under The Skin and we finish with Tool …

…and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

Well, we have a lot of friends that play in really good bands, so I’ll say Tarah Who? Or Dry Can… if you don’t know them you should take a look, they are really good!

We play a lot with our friends in Dry Can. We also have the chance to play on stage with really talented musicians (Thierry Dutru, Gilles Le Moyn and Nicolas Bazin), they play in a lot of projects.
