Band of the Day: Silence The Radio

Rhode Island rockers Silence The Radio release a new video today for “Friendly Neighborhood Nightmare”, and have also announced their new EP (Friendly Neighborhood Nightmares) which will be out on December 1st. So we know a bit about the music, but what about the band themselves? Let’s ask them a few questions…

Simple things first – where are you guys from?

Providence, Rhode Island.

How did you meet?

All of us met through playing local venues in downtown Providence with our old bands. We started hanging together at shows and eventually decided to get together and see what happened. That’s why we’re playing now.

How long have you been playing as a band?

We played our first official show back in January, 2015.

Before you get sick of being asked… where does the band name come from?

JACK: I use to have a friend when I was in middle school who told me this story about how before Kurt Cobain’s first suicide attempt, he took an old radio and turned the volume all the way down. I’m pretty sure he was totally making it up, but the phrase “Silence the Radio” still stuck with me and we ended up all agreeing on that name.

What are your influences?

We grew up during the wave of mid 2000s alt-rock, so bands like Green Day, Rise Against and Fall Out Boy kind of shaped our love for music.

Describe your music. What makes you unique?

It’s kind of like a mix between old radio pop punk and the newer wave of pop punk in the music scene. The chanting, catchy choruses are there, but there’s still a modern taste to it.

Do you have any particular lyrical themes?

Our new EP has an overarching theme of coping with mental disorders as a young adult, and about the personifications of those disorders that a lot of people end up creating as a result of trying to live with them.

What’s your live show like? How many shows have you played?

It’s usually thirty minutes of thrashing around while we play, with interludes of us making potty jokes with the crowd.

What’s the wildest thing you’ve seen or done at a live show?

Someone usually ends up throwing a guitar, even if it’s a stupid idea because we only have that one guitar.

What kit do you use / guitars do you play / etc.?

Josh uses an SJC Custom kit. Jack, Thom and Brandon all rock Fenders.

What, if anything, are you plugging/promoting at the moment?

We’re promoting the release of our brand new EP, Friendly Neighborhood Nightmares. It comes out December 1st on iTunes and Spotify. You can watch the music video for the titular track now on our Facebook and Youtube! [or down below… – Mosh]

What are your plans for the rest of 2017, into 2018?

Play shows all around the east coast, record more music, release more music and keep doing what we love.

If you were second on a three-band bill, which band would you love to be supporting and which band would you choose to open for you? A chance to plug someone you’ve toured with, or a mate’s band we’ve not heard of before!

We’d probably go with SWMRS as the headliner and our friends in Ten Cents Short as the opener.

From previous Band of the Day Inquire Within: If you had to pick just one album to listen to for the rest of your life, what would it be?

JACK: American Idiot by Green Day

THOM: Commit This To Memory by Motion City Soundtrack

BRANDON: What You Don’t See by The Story So Far

JOSH: The Greatest Generation by The Wonder Years

From another BotD, Tomorrow is Lost: If you could only take one thing on tour what would each member of the band take?

JACK: A laptop filled with every episode of Dragon Ball Z.

THOM: Headbands.

BRANDON: My Nintendo Switch.

JOSH: My laptop.

And from Oceans: Why?

JACK: Because I love Dragon Ball.

THOM: Because I love weed.

BRANDON: Because I love Nintendo.

JOSH: Because I’m a responsible young man.
