The brilliant Voodoo Vegas have lent their talents to the acoustic charity single “Sleeping In The Rain” with all proceeds going to support Crisis in fighting homelessness. The song itself focusses on the harsh realities of the loneliness and rejection suffered by the homeless. “Sleeping In The Rain” appears on the band’s sophomore record Freak Show Candy Floss.
On the track and the issue of homelessness, frontman Lawrence Case says:
“Sleeping in the Rain” is a very personal song for me. Playing shows in different towns and cities around the UK, I’ve noticed that many of the streets are full of rough sleepers. I’ve read a lot of articles on homelessness and often will help out rough sleepers by buying them food and trying to help them get into a shelter for the night. I think it really sucks how in city centres around the UK hundreds of people can walk past a homeless man/woman and not offer to buy them a drink or a sandwich or even say hello. This is where the idea for the lyrics comes from.
Collaborating with the band on the video was comic artist Jason Johnson and Cloud Music Typography who captured the distinctive look and artwork of the video.
On the band’s new album, Lawrence states:
Freak Show Candy Floss is the first music written entirely with the new Voodoo Vegas line up. Where some bands find it hard to write their second album, Voodoo Vegas had a ton of energy going into the writing of this album and it didn’t feel like writing our second album, it felt like this was our first.
The band hit the road this week for a few dates and will be roaming Europe over the course of the next few months including a four-date run in the Netherlands with Y&T. A full set of UK dates can be found below.
Visit Crisis’ site for more information on the organisation and their work fighting homelessness. At the end of the day, the video says it best: “Who are we as humans if we ignore the suffering of others”. In a world that’s often focused on it’s own selfish motives, Voodoo Vegas are here to set the record straight. Anyway, without further ado, enjoy the video!
