Saturday Video Roundup: 2Cellos, Lazlo, Darkship, David Bowie

Wow. Well, here we are with the last Video Roundup of 2016. At the time of writing, I’ve got three videos in my queue and I doubt I’ll see any more drop into the mailbox as the day proceeds, so video four is going to be a personal choice from earlier in the year…

2Cellos – “They Don’t Care About Us (Live at Arena di Verona)”

2Cellos have been dropping tracks from this concert up you YouTube for a couple of weeks now, and they’re all great. This happens to be the latest, a cover of a Michael Jackson track, but tell me you couldn’t bang your head from the moment the lights erupt and the smoke cannons fire. And look at that venue when the camera pans outside. Stunning.

Lazlo – “Pioneers”

It’s been a long road for Lazlo, having taken 5 years of developing to get to the point of releasing their debut EP Time Honoured. In this time the band have gigged with an array of successful bands including Feeder and The Pigeon Detectives.

Frontman Roy Williamson commented on the release:

It’s a track we wanted maximum impact. The video was filmed in Hull, a location we chose specifically for its potency of beautiful landscapes mixed with urban decay. We wanted the song to extend a narrative about poverty, about morals, about friendship. Videos to me are a chance to flirt with another universe to create something brand new. It’s involving us in something else. The way that works is I like finding people that are really excited and hungry to make something. I love the idea of our song being a vehicle for whatever their passionate thing is that they want to get out.

Having the opportunity to act in the video was really awesome but also it was a real eye opener walking around the city as a homeless person and witnessing the public’s reaction, I went for a coffee at one point on my own and the two ladies serving me were instantly dubious of me as a character. At least until I started to speak and be affable towards them. Then I think they were just a little bit confused.

Lazlo are encouraging any potential donations towards Hull HARP; a local homeless charity providing food, clothing, and shelter to homeless people in Hull and the East Riding of Yorkshire, who hold 33 years of experience of working with homeless people.

If you wish to donate, you can do so via PayPal through the charity’s official website.

Darkship – “II Hearts”

Brazil’s melodic prog power metallers Darkship have unleashed a new music video, “II Hearts”, in support of their debut album We Are Lost released earlier this year. The album features ten songs with album artwork done by artist Carlos Fides of Artside Studio (Evergrey, Noturnall, Shaman, Almah). The album is the first part of the band’s concept trilogy based on a fictional story about two people in love who are controlled by a force called “Darkship”.

David Bowie – “Lazarus”

It seems fitting to end this year with a video from one of the first big names we sadly lost during it. Bowie was considerate enough to finish working on this final album, Blackstar, before passing away on January 10th. “Lazarus” was his final music video. Sadly, Bowie himself wasn’t going to rise again as the Biblical character of the same name does, but his music and influence will last well into 2017 and beyond.
