Single Review: Pearl Jam – “Running”

“Running” is the second single following “Dark Matter”, off the upcoming album also called Dark Matter, which is due out on April 19th.

The song is very punky with Bad Religion, Ramones and Offspring vibes. The “Corduroy” riff is turned inside out while the song is very much driven by Mike (McCready, guitar) and Matt (Cameron, drums) like the first single. Eddie’s (Vedder, frontman) ultra fast vocals are reminiscent of “State of Love and Trust” (Singles Soundtrack, 1992), “Johnny Guitar” (Backspacer, 2009) and “Mind Your Manners” (Lightening Bolt, 2013).

There’s an air of Binaural (2000) but it’s on its flip side; lighter, without the inherent gloom. A twist of 60’s/ 70’s classic rock and a hint of Queens Of The Stone Age are entwined.  Pearl Jam aren’t messing around on this album. The single is driven like its predecessor, as an evolving return to their roots.
