Single Review: The Virginmarys – The Meds

Over three years since their last album, 2018’s Northern Sun Sessions, The Virginmarys have emerged from lockdowns to showcase their latest musical step forward with “The Meds”, their first release as a power duo. Having used it as an opener on their tour last year, it’s a brilliant introduction to their latest incarnation, still The Virginmarys but ever with their eye on the horizon.

Bristling, sharp guitar work from Ally Dickaty mingles with Danny Dolan’s ferociously frantic drumming as the pair continue to rally against social issues, this time taking aim at the futility of the rat race and the fight to stay afloat. Frustration punctuates Ally’s screams whilst simultaneously coating his throaty vocals with a dark cynicism whilst the urgency of Danny’s drums, cymbals rattling through the speakers, portrays someone on edge, desperate for sedation and to be eased.

As the punk-edged snarling riff mingles with Ally’s fading, echoing vocals, it reflects the defiance found in the human spirit, even in the struggle of a losing battle before turning to desperation to be free. Meanwhile, Danny’s machine gun-like drumming similarly builds throughout the track, evoking the idea of bashing your head against a brick wall, each hit harder than the last, upping the tempo ever so slightly to run towards success.

“The Meds” shows The Virginmarys at their bombastic best, as raw as they’ve ever sounded whilst bringing a massive, fuller, more rounded sound. Sonically, there’s hints of past material within but this still pushes them forward. It’s perfectly produced and crafted to create a song which has you absent-mindedly humming the melody and would be a perfect entry point for any newcomers. Meanwhile, die-hard fans will know this is Ally and Danny immediately, whether they’ve already heard it live, perfectly translated from the stage environment, or haven’t been able to make it out to see them over the past six months. As a first taste of what to expect from The Virginmarys as a two-piece, almost a year on from the announcement, they couldn’t have picked a better song.

“The Meds” is released on 18th March
