Single Review: Mantis and the Prayer – Murder Ballad and the Blue

Melbourne three-piece Mantis and the Prayer have released double A-side EP, Murder Ballad and the Blue. The two-track EP features “I Know You” and “Go Too Far” with themes of tragedy and disconnection, this, ladies and  gentlemen are right up my street.

Murder Ballad and the Blue is of the theatrical ilk, the band having the tagline of “If Nick Cave was in a good mood...” They cite influences of David Bowie, Syd Barrett and Pink Floyd. First up, “I Know You”. If you removed the bass from the voice of Nick Cave or Mark Lanegan you would get Mantis and the Prayer. Mantis is gentler on the ears with their operatic sound and like the Bad Seeds, this tune exudes tension. “Go Too Far” hits the groove bone, hitting me with their rhythm stick.

This is a tale of two tunes, one hits a nerve bone, while the other hits the groove senses.
