Single Review: roadrunner – Raskol in Retail

“Raskol in Retail” is roadrunner’s first ever single released from the forthcoming EP The Waste Sad Time. Formerly frontman of Grain Death (R.I.P), I was excited when roadrunner himself got in touch to tell me he had a new solo project on the cards and I was more than happy to take a listen.

Inspiration for the track was taken from his two year stint in retail, “whilst my brain turned to mush”. And it’s a fairly harrowing, honest tale, battling feelings of helplessness whilst being stuck on a hideous roundabout of debt and exhaustion.

Musically, the lo-fi production lends itself to the mood perfectly. A trippy, soft strumming intro complements roadrunner’s dulcet tones, the melody swells with discordance as lyrically it burgeons into frustration and disdain.

Delicate guitar tones become fuzzy and distorted and the whole track becomes more deranged as the narrative plays out. roadrunner executes this anguish superbly in the accompanying video that you can check out below. Feed your ears some post punk nourishment, “Raskol in Retail” is out now.
