Single Review: Flowers in Sulpher – Utopia Denied

Flowers In Sulpher are a UK/Austrian based project that were formed in order to project their take on the social injustices of this world and to stand up and take a stance against corrupt governments and individuals. With opening lyrics “Your weapons of lies are so fucking perfect”, it should give you the that Flowers in Sulpher want those accountable to be put in front of a firing squad. This project has taken years in the making and this single is just a taster of what is to come. So is it any good?

There is a heavy industrial feel to the music with Streetcleaner-era Godflesh and early Pitchshifter providing the background should give you an idea of how this sounds. Guitarists Stigney Williams and Andy also bring melodic industrial riffs with extreme metal into the mix with some fast strumming ones that are not far away from being played on a death metal album. Hardcore-ish vocals from Stouty yet again adds something different to the mix and he spits venom when screaming anti-establishment lyrics. Programming handled by Stigney and bassist Andy have been composed well and bring that feeling of nostalgia when listening to industrial metal for the first time.

Overall, this is a promising start for the band in their infancy. After repeated listens, it definitely grows on you and I must admit, the extreme metal fan in me likes the song more when they have the extreme riffs in their but that is a biased opinion. Give the band a listen and like their page and get in contact with them. We all need to start somewhere and “Utopia Denied” is a promising start.
