Gig Review: Cassyette / Witch Fever / Harpy – The Globe, Cardiff (1st April 2024)

Witch Fever (c) Gareth Nicol

Harpy takes to the stage accompanied by a pulsing electro beat and more than a fair amount of smoke. Not someone I was too familiar with if I’m honest, but what I’d heard had me intrigued. She has been described as industrial/goth pop, and, in an interview with Underground England, cited Nine Inch Nails’ A Downward Spiral’ as an influence on her sound. Tonight, accompanied by a backing track, she blasts through an impressive set, standouts for me being “Swallow”, and the new single (coincidentally released at midnight on April 1st), “Slaughterhouse”, was a BBC Introducing single of the week. Hopefully, a headline tour will be on the way very soon.

Manchester doom punks Witch Fever are up next. The four-piece (Amy, Alex, Alisha and Annabelle) having performed with the likes of Bob Vylan, Idles and the brilliant Cancer Bats, deliver a set that’s full of energy. For such a relatively young band, they exude the confidence of seasoned performers with years of tours under their belts. Kicking off with the opener from their excellent album Congregation, “Blessed be Thy” hits with grungey guitar and a thumping bass line. Some of the lyrics are a hard listen, taking you to very dark places but then, it may be what’s needed to wake people up to the current situation in the world.

Cassyette (c) Gareth Nicol

It’s fair to say that Cassyette is the name on everyone’s lips right now. Following a sold out run opening for Bring Me the Horizon, along with her own US tour, a stripped-down piano session with Radio One’s Clara Amfo… I could go on. Tonight’s show in the intimate surroundings of The Globe promises to be a treat.

Entering to the strains of set opener “Ipecac”, resembling what I personally (some views may differ) a crazed, wicked Easter bunny, she instantly has the crowd in the palms of her hands. Full of smiles, engaging with the adoring crowd. Next, she heads into her heavier influences with the pop-metal “Like That”, the fifty second screamfest that is “DIEHATECRY”, and one of my personal favourites, “September Rain”. This, along with “Petrichor” serve to highlight an incredible vocal range.

By her own admission, the forthcoming album has been a lot of hard work but after what we’ve experienced tonight, it’s all paid off.
