Gig Review: Scene Queen / In Her Own Words / Delilah Bon – The Waterfront, Norwich (4th October 2023)

Opening the night we had Delilah Bon, who uniquely creates a mix of hip-hop and punk influences within her music. She started her career by speaking out about sexual harassment in the music industry, projecting her outrage in the form of music – which I think is an excellent and very important way to use your platform and still do what you love.

Her song “I Don’t Listen To You” was a stand-out to me, speaking out about how the femme body is often objectified and the voyeuristic intentions women have held against them in today’s society. She really set the scene that the night was all about empowerment and rallying together to fight against these social issues.

Slap bang in the middle of this gig we had In Her Own Words, who have recently released their new album Distance Or Decay (which I gotta admit is a really cool album name). Fresh off their tour with Set It Off, they hit the stage with energy and intention of putting on a cracking set, which I can confirm they did.

It was an interesting change of pace visually I must admit, however I think a well thought out change of pace. Their discography is focused around relationships, whether it be looking at the positives of an ended relationship (like in “Footprints”) or looking back at the memories when you’re hurting (like in “Raining In Toronto”). All in all these guys were really cool and I am interested to see what else they release.

Then it was to the main act; Scene Queen themselves. Starting out with a strong song – “Pink Whitney” – and going all the way to my absolute favourite “Barbie & Ken”, this set was honestly phenomenal.

I had heard a few Scene Queen songs before however I was quite uneducated on their music and my lord did this gig show me just how confident and powerful they are. Looking out for the crowd throughout the gig and even getting people up on stage to join their sorority (which my friend Berry became a part of) it is obvious that they care about their music and the message the songs send to people.

I quite like how they obviously hinted to an encore song whilst also keeping the tensions high as to what was going to play last (hint hint: it was “Pink Panther”). Scene Queen are definitely going to be a new obsession of mine along with Delilah Bon.
