Gig Review: Blind Channel / Lost Society – Cathouse, Glasgow (13th September 2022)

I didn’t think it would be this soon after Bloodstock that I’d make it to another gig, but bless those blackened hearts at Nuclear Blast UK for throwing this gig my way. It’s barely been four weeks since I saw Lost Society slay the Ronnie James Dio stage in the scorching heat at Bloodstock (my view coming soon!) but after that killer show I’m more than happy to be watching them kill it on my home turf. Headliners Blind Channel remain a curiosity, my only familiarity (like many others) being their performance as Finland’s entry in the 2021 Eurovision Song Contest however I’m excited to see what they have to offer.

I arrived at The Cathouse to a packed room as Lost Society raged onstage. I entered the main room to the sight of Samy and the boys blasting “112”, the “Carry the weight of the world on my shoulders” refrain ringing over the PA as the heads are banging down the front. The set is similar to that of Bloodstock, which is fair given the band have been touring solidly throughout the Summer festivals to now, until a few weeks time. The singles from upcoming fifth album If the Sky Came Down are on display with latest tune “What Have I Done” shortly following the previous tune.

The sound is well balanced throughout the set, each element standing out on its own, with the rumbling bass, especially in the intro to “Riot” supporting the heavy guitars and clear soloing. Frontman Samy Elbanna works the crowd throughout the set, invoking cheers and fists any time he addresses the audience. Lost Society nail the set, every solo on point and the performance bursting with energy throughout numbers like “No Absolution” through to closing tune “Stitches” when Elbanna makes his way through the crowd to standing atop the bar opposite the stage to rage with the crowd at the back.

Constant touring for weeks haven’t slowed Lost Society down, with the band on top form delivering an all-round awesome performance, and it’s only going to get better following their imminent release – due October 7th.

Blind Channel follow, with not a soul having left the venue. I had no idea how big they are but the crowd are ravenous for the band’s brand of violent pop, roaring between songs and inciting the infamous sound of the traditional Glasgow “Here we, here we, here we fuckin’ go” chants several times throughout the set. The band never lose control of the crowd with the singing along to most songs (including a sneaky snippet of Limp Bizkit’s rap metal classic “Rollin’”), culminating in the frontman getting the crowd down low and bouncing to a killer cover of Anastasia’s classic “Left Outside Alone” before their Eurovision smash “Dark Side”- middle fingers raising the room as the lyrics command.

It’s a tight, energetic performance worthy of a bigger stage. Blind Channel are definitely a band to keep an eye and ear on.
