Gig Review: Sons of Liberty / Trident Waters – Asylum, Birmingham (26th Feb 2022)

Trident Waters (c) Shaun Hulme

The Asylum in Birmingham plays host to Bristol’s flamboyant  southern rockers Sons of Liberty with support from Trident Waters.

Trident Waters open the night in the intimate smaller room at the venue with the 3 piece London based outfit giving a very tight performance.

Anthony Knightley (Vocals/Guitar) has a very smooth blues style tone to his playing which is displayed most on the brilliant track “Wings of Love”, clearly you can hear the influence of Joe Bonamassa and John Lee Hooker coming through, put that together with his powerful emotional vocals and you have a great front man.

With a cracking back catalogue of high energy solid songs, Trident Waters have opened up the evening perfectly and I look forward to seeing more of these guys in the future.

So it is time for the headliners Sons of Liberty and these guys make for a welcome distraction from the bad news in the world.

They are full of energy bouncing around the small stage and get the set under way with “It’s My Bad”, “Rich man, Poor Man”  and “Up Shit Creek”,  This is southern rock music at its finest.

It has to be said it is a small crowd tonight and this may be due to the early start and early curfew, that said though it doesn’t make a shred of difference to the guys on stage, I think if the room had been empty they still would of put the same high energy show on.

They hit the crowd with the brilliant song “Damaged Reputation” as they menacingly stomp and growl around the stage during the chorus. It is the sort of song that gets the adrenaline pumping and chest pushed out, great track.

Another epic track is “Don’t Hide Behind Your weakness” , a song I would have playing out of my imaginary Mustang while driving down route 66, maybe one day who knows.

The excellent “Fire & Gasoline” and “Ruby Starr” make up the encore of this refreshing band pushing the southern rock genre better than most.

Sons of Liberty open up the Saturday at Planet Rock’s Winters end  this weekend so if you are at the gig I really recommend you get there early to catch these guys, you will not be dissapointed!
