Gig Review: Cannibal Corpse / Man Must Die – Limelight 2, Belfast (22nd March 2018)

Scotland’s Man Must Die were the support for the three Irish dates of the Cannibal Corpse tour. Lead vocalist Joe McGlynn is an imposing figure, commanding the crowd from the second they hit the stage. Unbelievably heavy in all respects, from the double guitar work of Alan and Daniel to the relentless drums from Tony. Stand out tracks on the night were the “It Comes in Threes”, “No Tolerance for Imperfection” and the closer “Kill it, Skin it, Wear It” all of which saw a fair amount of pit activity from the crowd in the Limelight.

Having sold out earlier in the day, The Limelight was about to burst at the seams by the time Cannibal Corpse hit the stage for the last date of their European tour. George ‘Corpsegrinder’ Fisher stepped up and all of a sudden the venue seems a very small place indeed. His menacing presence and incitement of the crowd resulted in chaos erupting during the first few songs. Thankfully with the help of the security staff I was able to make it to a safe distance to enjoy the rest of the set.

Cannibal Corpse are well versed at what they do, but it does not mean that they have lost any of the ferocity over the years that they have been playing live. Drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz is brutal behind the kit whilst Pat O’Brien and Rob Barrett demonstrate extreme precision on the guitar work.

The set started with songs from the latest album Red Before Black such as “Only One Will Die” before moving through the band’s back catalogue. Stand out tracks were “Devoured by Vermin”, “I Cum Blood” and “Stripped, Raped and Strangled”.

Closing track “Hammer Smashed Face” saw 5-stringer Alex Webster perfectly execute the bass break, which was duly noted and received a massive cheer from the crowd.

A Thursday night of extreme pulverising death metal, what could be better?
