Album Review: ALT BLK ERA – Rave Immortal

Having burst onto the scene and quickly asserting sibling dominance by winning over audiences at Glastonbury, Reading, and Download, and opening for artists such as Tom Morello and Lord of the Lost, Nottingham’s ALT BLK ERA show no signs of slowing down with their highly anticipated debut album, Rave Immortal.

Wrapped around themes of diversity and inclusion, it centres on Nyrobi coming to terms with a disabling illness and documents the support she received from Chaya. From pain and struggle to newfound strength and unconditional love, all of this is delivered through a plethora of influences and soundscapes.

The album kicks off with the emotive “Straight to Heart,” which has a clear narrative and a great drum and bass undercurrent. This serves as an excellent introduction to the hugely impactful “Come On Outside,” with its powerful chorus and great basslines.

Easily the most memorable tracks are the combination of “Crashing Parties” and “My Drummer’s Girlfriend,” with waves of The Prodigy influences throughout.

At the halfway mark, “Hunt You Down” continues the awe-inspiring listen with hypnotic tones and a pop heartbeat, flowing into the fully charged “Upstairs Neighbours,” which could easily become a future live favourite.

“Come and Fight Me For It” and the single “Run Rabbit” showcase sleek production and highlight why the sisters are among the most unique and exciting new alternative acts today. The album pulls you in so many directions, each getting better as the journey unfolds.

Rave Immortal concludes with the ethereal “Catch Me If You Can,” a delicate and goosebump-inducing track that should come with a health warning. It ends with the album’s title track, which effortlessly pulls together everything great about the record for one final offering. It’s nothing short of a chef’s kiss. Quite frankly, at this point, predicting this album picking up award after award wouldn’t be a stretch.

If you aren’t already part of the ALT BLK ERA, you soon will be.
