Album Review: Super Monster Party – Rage Quit

Super Monster Party have been around for a while with a couple of albums already out. Their standard loadout is a huge number of short tracks, with half of them being brief “interludes” between the actual songs. This hasn’t changed for Rage Quit which features 25 tracks, but a running time of under an hour.

The album takes us on a journey as a young boy enters the fictional world of Permadeath where video games are real and most certainly, dangerous. Song by song he travels through these different games and takes on the role of the hero or villain as the truth unfolds layer by layer. There are songs based on Doom, Mortal Kombat, Sonic, Mario Bros and more.

Their love of gaming comes through the entire album. The interlude tracks are narrative and just the right kind of cheesy, with the songs pandering to their source material. “This Is Doom” is appropriately metal as all Hell, “Upon The Triforce” is very epic, and “Another Castle” the surprise ballad… well, isn’t Mario Bros a quest for lost love?

“Test Your Might” could be played during an MMA match, especially with it’s chants of “Fight!” and “Finish Him!”, and recent single “Blue Hurricane” is a perfect speed metal homage to Sonic on his 33rd birthday. DragonForce would be proud (indeed, jealous) of this one. “Castlevania” of course has a Transylvanian / vampiric edge to it, but otherwise is a stomping metal number.

The fun ramps up with “Dance Dance Revolution” which could squeeze onto an Electric Callboy setlist. In fact, get Super Monster Party the support slot the next time the German dance metallers tour. This is a marriage made in digital heaven. Thankfully the “Earthworm Jim” song is good otherwise I’d be annoyed. Admittedly I’m not hugely aware of the game (I think I played it years ago), but the cartoon is brilliant.

Rage Quit is just so much fun. Very much one which suits the metal community as so many of us are also gaming nerds, and the tunes aren’t throwaway crap either. It’s decent music, played well, tongue firmly in cheek, and rounded off well with the interludes. Very much one to look forward to.
