Album Review: Vulgar Chaos – The Edge of Sanity

Vulgar Chaos flew all the way over from Mallorca to play at our little shindig (Moshville Oktoberfest) last year. Oh, tickets still on sale for this year’s event, by the way! I loaned them a guitar that kind of stayed in tune and they played a blinder of a set. I also picked up a t-shirt and a copy of their Rising From The Ashes album that was bloody good. So I apologise to them for missing the release date for The Edge of Sanity and hope this quick review will make up!

I’m more annoyed as it’s an absolute thumper and I could have been listening to it for longer. The five full tracks are wrapped in suitably off-kilter recorded interviews that I Googled a bit to find are from an interview with a catatonic schizophrenic. Coincidentally, Marianas Reach used the same audio source as the introduction to their single “Diseased” last year. The only downside to the Prelude, Interlude and Postlude tracks are that there are only five songs remaining making this more of an EP than an album.

This is a shame as the five songs are great and I’d have welcomed another couple! “Hate” has all the anger of anything Slayer ever released, but “Dark Waters”‘ chugging rhythms and massive beat probably steals the show for me. The title track can be checked out in the video below, to give you an idea of their sound.

They’ve definitely maintained the quality from Rising… and are very much a force to be reckoned with. Could Mallorca be home to the next big thing in metal? On the strength of these two releases, I’d not say it’s impossible.
