Album Review: Kataklysm – Goliath

Returning to deliver unapologetic waves of sneering death metal, Kataklysm release their fifteenth studio album Goliath.

Opening in a style which has very much been their way for over three decades, “Dark Wings of Deception” contains a multitude of drop tuned guitars and unrelenting drum patterns. This is followed up by the punishing circle pit inducing title track “Goliath”.

Mashing modern metal elements with a splash of djent is the band’s second single, “Die as a King”, which acts as prequel to “Bringer of Vengeance” with the respective videos serving a visual two-part story.

The middle part of the album contains a trilogy of barbaric proportions with “Combustion”, “From the Land of the Living to the Land of the Dead”, and “The Redeemer” all feeding into each other making this the real backbone of the release and easily my favourite section of the album, with last of the three the particular highlight.

Charging into “Heroes to Villains” really fires home Goliath’s recognitions of current global events, and almost through this questions the album’s lyrical content.

“Gravestones & Coffins” continues to hold the listeners attention with a combination of Maurizio Iacono’s vocal delivery and musical structure. There are slower elements in this track that work so well and final track “The Sacrifice for Truth” starts with slow building drum patters which morph into the album’s most anthemic performance so far. I’m not just saying that for the subtle Paradise Lost-sounding guitars.

Kataklysm have delivered another memorable album. It may have taken longer to produce but the time has most certainly been used wisely to craft something to stand out just that little extra.
