I can’t believe it’s been eight years since we featured I Love Rich as a “New Band Of The Day” (as our Headline Act was back then). At the time we described them as a “punky/rocky kind of sound, brash and bouncy with the type of lyrics that would make Steel Panther blush”. Have they grown up? Here’s hoping not…
The album features a dozen songs; ten new ones and two updates of older ones. Tone-wise they’re very much a good old fashioned hard rock n’ roll act with some quality toe tappers and head bangers scattered throughout. The majority are AC/DC or The Darkness-level smutty with titles such as “I Paid in Sex”, “God’s Gift To Women” and “Revolution in my Pants” but the lyrics aren’t as cheap and cheesy as the titles might suggest.

Opening with “Rock and Roll is Gonna Burn” is a solid choice, a quality number which has all the fire suggested in the title. I Love Rich manage to keep the heat going through the majority of songs with some genuinely good numbers which stick out (in the non-naughty way). “(My Baby’s on a) Sex Strike” and “It’s Time To Turn It On” rank as two of the best despite being two very different songs. The former is a sleazy little number and fairly middle-of-the-road in terms of style, but it does what it does well. The latter is pretty different from the rest of the album, quite a slow number with some quirky guitar sounds and yet still damn catchy.
I’ve looked at a few photos and I Love Rich are one of those bands who may take their music seriously, but very little else. In other words they look like they’d be great fun! With a couple of releases now behind them, I can see them putting on a pretty enjoyable set. While the music isn’t genre-breaking, it’s the attitude that counts and I Love Rich go at it balls-out (oo-er).
