I came across Crypt Rot near enough this time last year when their self titled EP full of horror samples and garroting style vocals was released. One year on, the Welsh duo return with their debut album An Ancient Summoning.
No samples to gently break us in as “The Work Of Worms” is a full on assault on the senses and has the type of vulgarity that would think nothing of digging up a fresh corpse and delivering back to a relatives house. This is then followed by title track “An Ancient Summoning” which is just as much loaded in the frenzy department as the previous track, but the vocals particularly are a lot more feral.
“Arcane Rites” marks the first of three guest appearances. Fulci vocalist Fiore Stravino gives the album a newer dimension and the swirling guitar parts that go alongside the tempo changes make this easily the highlight track of the album.
With its slower more methodical approach “One Thousand Serpent Tongues” certainly makes a great radio single, and the guitar tones and solos are honestly wonderful. “Nasty” is really the only accurate description I can give to “Pestilential Vortex” but there is a tinge of Nile in there to sweeten up the listener.

The album concludes with the two final guest appearances. First up owner of GLDCHN studios Floor van Kuijk has lent his talents to various projects as well as his own band’s so this is a welcome addition. Finally “Diabolically Reborn” features Larry Wang to deliver one final nail in this coffin of putrid maggots.
Pulverizing brutality personified.
