HPND! Vol 1 comes from the collaboration between horror punk podcast sensation Dan P. from Horrorpunk’s Not Dead! and his new label We are Horror Records. Dan P tells us:
I have started it (We are Horror Records) so I can release the compilations under one umbrella so to speak. So all of the Horrorpunk’s Not Dead! compilations will be released through this label. I already have interest from bands within in the scene so I will eventually branch out into being a Bonafide label! This compilation, Vol. 1, is the first release through We are Horror, and I’m already working at putting together Vol. 2 because the dead don’t rest! My plan is to showcase the best modern horror punk, deathrock, and psychobilly bands in the world! To quote 5¢ Freakshow.. “We may be freaks, but we are not alone… The Horror is Here!”
With 19 exclusive tracks, anyone who is a fan of horrorpunk or just punk or horror in general will love this compilation!
While there are some absolute bangers on this compilation there are some real stand-out tracks for me. Voice of Doom bring that much needed old school horror punk vibe, drenched in feedback and is pure unadulterated balls-to-the-wall New York punk, which really sets the tone for this belter of a compilation. Won’t Stay Dead start slow and sultry, with clean vocals that are reminiscent of a ballad and a melody that reminds me of “A Little Piece of Heaven” by ‘Avenged Sevenfold’, slowly building from an almost proggy ballad into a kick-ass punchy punkrock track. Pumpkin Guts kickstart with a ‘My Chemical Romance’ style intro which merges into what I can only describe as “Blink-182 goes horror”, this is certainly one for all of those whose playlists are firmly stuck in the 90’s!

Damage 66 – “Fuck You (If You’re Not Bruce Campbell)”… this has to be my all time favourite horror punk tracks, with a catchy chorus that will have you screaming “Fuck you if you’re not Bruce Campbell” all night long! The Tomb Tones start their track with an almost 1950’s doo wop sound which reminds me of Imelda May, then transforming into a psychobilly hit that I feel could have been lifted straight from the soundtrack of a cheesy 50’s horror B-movie. Evelyn’s Casket’s track “Evelyn” – simply is the quintessential track for anyone who is wanting to get into modern horrorpunk! “Legacy” from Boogeyman is one for the Green Day fans, with catchy riffs that just get your body moving, the bands vocalist Ryan Zellmer sounds very reminiscent of 90’s Misfits vocalist Michael Graves too, very cool!
Chesty Malone and the Slice ‘em Ups appear on this compilation with “Chesty Malone Rules, Poseurs Fuck Off!” which brings their classic hardcore punk sound mixed with the raspy shouty vocals making for a great aggressive addition to this compilation, additionally, if you like this (which you obviously will!) go and check out their track “Ticket Wallet Drugs and Chicken”, it’s a banger! Silent Horror who recently released a true crime EP entitled Case Files, Vol. 1 feature here with their digital-only single “Astrofiends”, whose lyrics mix both themes of horror and sci-fi, bringing a fun and energetic sound into the mix. … (Wait does that make it the alien anthology?! Ridley Scott films that is!)
Overall this has been an interesting look into the modern horror punk scene, with some great and carefully thought-out song choices. I’m very much looking forward to seeing what Vol. 2 has in store for us in the future.
