Album Review: Fallen Temples – Reborn Every Dawn

Speak it quietly or better still, shout it from the rooftops, for South Wales trio Fallen Temples are back with some new music and very welcome it is too. The band who formed in 2015 have been through a few tough times in recent times but have emerged from the pandemic with a re-energised vigour which has seen them play some huge gigs, including the inaugural Swansea Arena event.

It’s been a long time since their debut EP, The Future we Left Behind was released – six whole years to be exact and the Bloodstock alumni have no doubt been chomping at the bit to get back into the studio and record some of their now well-established songs so that the listening public have more than six songs to get their listening gear around.

With ex-Revoker bassist Shane Phillips joining the band in 2021, the Fallen Temples line-up is now Adam Vaughan (guitar/vocals), Joe Stirland (drums) and Phillips. Reborn Every Dawn sees the band completing their cycle of songs that they had worked on with former bassist Joe Lewis so in some ways it’s almost a cathartic closure of the first chapter of the band. Regardless of the background, what you get here is four absolute bullet proof hard rock songs that ooze with quality, hooks, and heavy riffs that all bury deep into the memory. Four definite earworms, and a reminder that Fallen Temples are a band well worth checking out if you haven’t already.

It’s been too long since I’ve seen the boys live, after a period when I saw them virtually weekly around the time they finished as runners up to 2019’s Metal to the Masses winners Blind Divide but were invited to join the fun on the New Blood Stage. One listen to “Broken” immediately why Fallen Temples are such an exciting band both to listen to but also live. It’s got a perfect blend of melody and rip-snorting metal edged hardness. The riff cries out for head banging, with Vaughan’s superb vocals soaring high. It’s followed by the huge “As Long as I Can Stand”, an anthemic bruiser with another memorable chorus. The rhythm section is rock solid, the sound big and the whole approach one of a band who are not short of confidence. It sweeps through, demanding movement and more nodding in approval.

Two bangers down and two more to come. “Phoenix” has a crafty groove that soaks into the pores, the harmonies on the vocals adding depth and texture. It’s becoming repetitive to say that Fallen Temples throw in hook after hook but it’s exactly what they do. Their songs are excellently crafted, with an appeal that should grab you by the lapels and demand attention. “Phoenix” does exactly that with a lovely, fuzzed up feel and a gorgeous bluesy solo that brings a whole extra dimension to the song. There’s a little bit of a grungy feel to the final track, the smouldering “Blood from Stone”. It’s slower in tempo with a huge singalong element, but the riffs remain heavy and punishing, and the brooding feel gives it the gravitas it needs. It’s a big song to close an EP that is flawless in every aspect.

It’s great to have some new music from Fallen Temples, and with Vaughan confirming that the band will be back in the studio imminently, it’s certainly well worth keeping an eye on the band’s socials to keep track of what’s happening.
