EP Review: Maziac – Permutations

Maziac released their debut album Forged in 2019, around which time we featured them as a Band of the Day. The follow-up to that release, Permutations, is due out at the end of this month so what can you expect after two long years (especially “that” year)?

Mixed and mastered by Justin Hill of SikTh, you know the band have spared no expense on getting things sounding just right and its paid off. Their broad-based genre pigeonhole says they play progressive metal and alternative rock, and it’s the metallic side that shines through more often than not. The rockier elements are interspersed here and there to perhaps give the vocalist’s throat a rest from the harsher side of things! “Adrasteia” is perhaps the best example of this.

Landing on your head like a mad, twanging robot this sets itself up to be a hell of a heavy beast (and it is), but there are some delightfully airy and chilled out segments which really emphasise how wonderfully violent the rest of the song is. “The Key” hits the middle ground a little more, with clean vocals alongside heavier music, plus some crushing sections.

Oh, of course they turn everything on its head with the wholly progressive “Sunset”. Just to prove that they can.

I think this is Maziac’s strength. Balancing the pounding drums and low-end, twanging bass effortlessly with simple, melodic guitar solos and soulful vocals. There are only five songs on here and I wasn’t sure what to expect when I pressed “play”. What I’m sure of now, though, is that I will still be listening to this EP by year’s end. It’s original, varied, catchy and heavy. A great combination.
