Brunhilde are a “power duo” from Germany – singer Carolin Loy (“Caro”) and guitarist/songwriter Kurt Bauereiß, and Choir Boy is their debut release. The rock/punk pairing are backed by bassist Oliver Holzwarth (who has played with Blind Guardian) and Bastian Emig (Van Canto) on drums. Only four songs feature on this little release, but as a taster of things to come, it’s a promising collection.
The band show off their punkier tones with “Choir Boy”, which bears quite a similarity to Megadeth’s “Liar” during the fast-paced, spat-vocal sections. This up against the slightly gentler refrain of “I’m not a choir boy” during the chorus makes for a track with two different faces. It’s an easy song to get into your head, and a hard one to get rid of!

Debut single “When You Were Born I Was Already Dead” is more of a rocker, and at this point, Caro’s vocals really take over. They are more than a little bit reminiscent of Maria Brink’s (In This Moment), being throaty yet powerful… and this is no bad thing. You can check this one out in the video below.
To throw another spin on things, “It’s All Lies” is a piano-based ballad. Consisting of just Caro with the instrument as backing (no guitars, no nothing else bar some strings partway through), it’s an unusual and brave number to feature in such a truncated release. It’s also by far the longest track on here, clocking in at just over five minutes. Thing is, it’s a lovely song… just hugely out of place. I’d have been tempted to put it on last as it’s that kind of gentle song you can fade out an album to.
Final track “Golddigger” brings the other instruments back online, being a bit of a heavy number. Plenty of bass on this one encourages a bit more head-nodding than earlier songs, and the chorus and main riff really stir things up.

Choir Boy is an intriguing release, especially with the inclusion of “It’s All Lies”. Brunhilde certainly have something going for them and it will be interesting to see what direction they go in from here.
