Album Review: Twitch Of The Death Nerve – A Resting Place For The Wrathful

I’m not usually one to listen to music at the heavier end of the scale that we cover (and we cover some pretty heavy shit), but sometimes all you want is something to devastate your brain. I’ve had a bad week. Twitch Of The Death Nerve helped.

Billed as “brutal death metal”, there’s a fair bit of grindcore in here as well. The guttural, slimy vocals really make the whole album utterly evil. Even more so that it would have been anyway with the spine-smashing speed of the riffs and blast beats. The theme of the album isn’t exactly one of unicorns, rainbows and glittery love-hearts, so this works. In fact, given that the song titles include the likes of “Apotropaic Scarification”, “Promulgation Of Infected Innards” and “This Sickening Frailty”, if you find any of this to be at all light-hearted then I advise you to put down any sharp objects you’re carrying, place your hands on your head and wait for the nice men in white jackets.

This is as apocalyptic an album as I’ve heard in a long time. Brief bursts of recorded speech (from films or somewhere else I’m not sure) add some atmosphere here and there, giving that little more depth to what otherwise is ten tracks of head bludgeoning aural violence.

As I said, I don’t listen to a lot of the extreme stuff but I’ve had this one on a bit of a repeat for the last couple of days. It’s cathartic, cheaper than buying a punchbag and (marginally) more socially acceptable than walking the streets with a machete while wearing a t-shirt printed with the slogan “Blood Donations Welcome Here”.
